2008 in Review

As the last hours of 2008 is winding down, I once again review the past year to prepare for the coming year

The year started with a shock as my student and fellow gamer THE PWNERER died from an accident. I coudn't grasp the fact that he's dead and i will no longer see and hear his jolly personality.. This month is also the month my very best friend left me for good. She and her husband migrated to Saudi Arabia but promised to keep in touch with me..a promise that was never kept..On the other hand, my all time favorite Happy Slip went to visit here in the Philippines, but I never had the chance to see her. sigh..bad month for me I guess

This is the month when Happy Slip toured the Philippines where I never had the chance to see her. This month also is the month when I met my new friend Laarni Aquino.

Finally I was happy because my dad came home from Saudi Arabia. He's been working there for 20 years now and he comes only once a year for a vacation.

Marked as the month I switched to Bayan DSL and left my crappy PLDT myDSL for good

My new buddy was pregnant! She was due on December. I'm scheduled to be the God Father

Frozen Glade, the server where me and my students play Ragnarok was wiped out and I quit Ragnarok for good. Bill Gates resigned from Microsoft

Flagship Studios closed and the last episode of Avatar the Last air Bender was aired

A display cabinet was built on my room. My figure collection started when I acquired the bunny version Asuka. I joined Otakai Figure Society, a forum for toy collectors like me.Ely Buendia suffered a heart attack from the Eraserheads Reunion concert.

Google launched their own browser, the Google Chrome. Anino Games was raided and penalized for using pirated software. My co-faculties gave me a very memorable birthday.

I was being recruited by Tsukiden..a Japanese outsourcing company. am I about to leave my profession? Find out in 2009

My quest for toy collecting continued as I filled my cabinet with more toys!

A strange heavenly formation occurred as the sky smiled upon us. My best buddy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, she named her Lovely Lucy. I once again completed the 9 mornings novena. Takipsilim was announced and it made a ruckus on the internet. ABS-CBN allegedly canned the project.

Takipsilim: Blessing or Curse?

Flowell officially declared the news of the Filipino Twilight remake a hoax!

Last December 23, nilabas ni Edgar Cruz ang article about sa remake ng ABS-CBN ng movie na Twilight, and the same time Perez Hilton releases his version of the clamor where everyone were furious about the idea. This morning i received an email from Tito Ed Cruz of regarding the updates on the alleged remake/adaptation of Twilight, with the local title Takipsilip where Rayver Cruz and Shaina Magdayao will be the main cast.

Here is Tito Ed's email as posted on the Entertainment Section of

“Di ko alam ako pala magdi-direct ng ‘Twilight,’” director Cathy Garcia Molina curtly replied when Buzzbox asked her if she is opting for a localized version of the blockbuster vampire novel. The buzz is that ABS-CBN had acquired the rights to the novel for US$1 million and that Cathy has been selected to direct it with Rayver Cruz as Edward Cullen and Shaina Magdayao as Isabella Swan.

Cathy informed Buzzbox her schedule is heavy as she has to finish principal photography and post-production of the John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo starrer “A Very Special Love 2,” Star Cinema’s Valentine offering, before she could work on a new project.

This led Buzzbox to inquire from the talent managers of the actors in the unofficial cast if they have been casted for specific roles. Anjie Ureta, manager of Chin Chin Gutierrez who will do the role of Esme Cullen replied, “As of today we have not received information or inquiry regarding ‘Twilight’ remake for Dos.” Becky Aguila, the manager of Joross Gamboa as Jasper Hale and Empress Schuck as Angela Weber, texted, “Di ko alam. Wala pang sinasabi.” Veronique del Rosario, the manager of Nikki Bacolod as Victoria answered, “Wala pang offer.”

Could this don’t-know approach be a ruse? I got this idea when Carlo Orosa, the manager of Karylle as Rosalie Hale, originally answered “Wala pang official.” When asked for a clarification, replied, “Can’t be revealed yet.” Could it be the whole project is still a top secret and people in the know were asked not to talk about it. This may be similar to the information embargo ordered by ABS-CBN top management for “I Love Betty La Fea” as to the actor who would play the role of Armando. This turned to be John Lloyd Cruz which Buzzbox correctly second-guessed.

There are strong reactions from ‘Twilight” cult fans that a petition for ABS-CBN not to proceed with the project is on-going. The petition centers two issues: ABS-CBN’s lack of ability to do justice to the novel and Rayver not being fit to do the Edward Allen part. Before they do this, they have to find out first if the buzz is for real or a hoax?

Save the effort and hate words, guys! Buzzbox clarified with ABS-CBN Corporate Communication Head Bong Osorio and after checking with ABS-CBN Television Head Cory Vidanes categorically stated: “There is no plan for ABS-CBN to remake ‘Twilight.’”

The original article on has already been deleted and the guy who posted that probably got slapped real hard.

Quoting my plurk buddy SuperBitch

haha sabi lang nila hoax yan kasi nega ang feedback so my feel is that they canned it before they even started.. lmao...

It is true many violently reacted to the news and many wanted to kill Rayver and Shaina, maybe they canned the project to save the lives of their two talents

Mr. Pierre Tito Galla the new Christy Fermin?

I don't want to comment on the blabbering of Joker in Exile A.K.A. Mr. Pierre Tito Galla about his twisted post regarding the Philippine Blog Awards and altering my post, but when the credibility of GameOPS is being threatened, I must take action and stop this nonsense.

I don't need to explain each and every detail of the situation because you can find it here. What I'm deeply troubled is to what Mr. Pierre Tito Galla is becoming. He's being mutated to Christy Fermin, now I don't have any qualms with Tita Christy and I know she'll be offended if I compare her to a nobody like Pierre (can I call you that Joker?) but what I'm trying to point out here is that Pierre is taking the facts and manipulating it to create sensationalize information. More like a tabloid article than a informative post I might say. Maybe he wanted to be a writer in Bulgar or Abante? Orrr maybe he wanted to be a contributor in The Buzz or Star Talk. We will never know unless he shed his cocoon and fly like a butterfly.

9 Mornings

I just finished today the 9 mornings novena for the preparation of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ which is known here as the "Simbang Gabi"

It starts on December 16 and ends at December 24..the eve of Christmas. A 9-morning mass celebrated usually at 4 o'clock in the morning in devotion to the coming of the Messiah. A tradition by the Filipinos originally intended for the farmers who cannot attend the usual morning mass which is 7:30am . Simbang Gabi is incomplete without the bibingkas and puto bungbongs sold in front of the churches. It is believed that if you attend all 9 masses you can make a wish and it will come true one way or another, a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. The validity of the said claim may or may not be true, many Catholics still wake up in the morning and attend the novena masses. I think it is within yourself your wishes can possibly come true.

Attack at Mumbai

A series of ten terrorist attacks that occurred across Mumbai, India's financial capital and largest city, on 26 November 2008. The main targets of the attack appeared to be Americans, Britons and Jews, but most of the casualties were locals and foreign tourists caught in the gunfire. At least 125 people including at least six foreign nationals have been confirmed dead, and at least 327 have been injured. All except one of the attacks took place in South Mumbai; at the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station; at two five-star hotels: the Oberoi Trident at Nariman Point, and Taj Mahal Palace & Tower near the Gateway of India; at the Leopold Café, a popular tourist restaurant in Colaba; at the Cama Hospital; and at the police headquarters where at least three high-level officers, including chief of the Anti Terrorism Squad of Maharashtra, were killed by gunfire. Between fifty and sixty terrorists have been involved in the attacks.

A previously unknown organization identifying itself as the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility by email sent to news organizations. Due to the apparent targeting of Britons, Americans, and Jews, the number of militants involved, the amount of equipment they used, and the pattern of co-ordinated attacks, several reporters and media analysts speculate that non-Indian Islamic terrorists may have been responsible. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said the attacks probably had “external linkages,” believing that the attack could not have occurred without help. The Indian Mujahideen terrorist group threatened in September 2008 to carry out bombings on sites in Mumbai.According to some news reports, a terrorist holding hostages at the Oberoi told an Indian TV channel that they wanted all 'Mujahideen' in Indian prisons released before they released their hostages. He also indicated that there were seven terrorists holding hostages at that location.Other reports indicate that this demand was made through a hostage at Nariman House, in a call to the Israeli consulate in New Delhi.

At least 125 people have been killed in the attacks and 327 wounded.Seven Britons, three Americans, two Australians, and two Canadians were among those injured.Among the dead are 81 Indian civilians, 14 policemen and six foreigners, including one Japanese, one Australian, one Briton, one Canadian, one Italian, and one German. In addition, nine terrorists were killed and nine more were arrested. According to British High Commissioner in India, Sir Richard Stagg, seven Britons have been injured in the terror strikes and one dead.Andreas Liveras, a British yachting tycoon, was among those confirmed killed.Eleven other foreigners of different nationalities were injured in the terror strikes and were admitted to the Bombay Hospital. Hospital sources said the injured foreigners are from Australia, USA, Norway, Spain, Canada and Singapore. However, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains that no Singaporean has been injured in the attacks.Three Americans and two Australians are reported amongst the injured.
According to Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, fourteen policemen have been killed in total, including the following high profile officers:
Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad Chief Hemant Karkare, who headed the team investigating the politically sensitive 2006 Malegaon blasts. Karkare had also been receiving death threats recently, including a threat to bomb his residence, but it is unclear if these were related to his death.
Additional Commissioner of Police: Ashok Kamte
Encounter specialist: Vijay Salaskar
Senior inspector Shashank Shinde, who had recently been involved in investigating many of India's recent bombings.
Three railway officials of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus also have been killed in the terror strikes.
The Government of Maharashtra announced Rs. 5 lakh (about 10,000 USD) compensation to the kin of those killed in the terror attacks and Rs. 50,000 (about 1,000 USD) to the seriously injured.
At least one media source (Press Trust of India, posted to was reporting a death toll of more than 280 as of 27 November.

The New Edsa Footbridge

It's been a while since Trinoma opened its door to the public. They all say that the appearance of Trinoma became a threat to SM North Edsa. But to me, SM isn't intimidated at all. Heck they made a foot bridge linking SM North and Trinoma and they also stationed some guards to it. The question is, what is Trinoma doing to this matter? Is SM the only one concerned with the convenience of the customers? I don't mind what people say

Friendster Downtime

The most popular social network here in the Philippines is down and inaccessible for the past few days. Thursday night, Friendster went down and until now is unaccessible. Some say it is a DDOS attack, some say it was overloaded with Filipino accounts. Either way, the effect of this downtime is easily seen on most computer rentals here in the Philippines because a lot of customers are in awe of the situation. Maybe it's time for them to wake up and realize that there more to internet than Friendster.

The future of computers?

We all remember the movie Minority Report where we drooled over the idea of controlling the interface of the computer with your hands and the interface is floating in midair. Thanks to Oblong, that fantasy can now become a reality.

Pablo Banila, a person suffering from ADHD?

Pablo needs your help. Give him some of your attention
My online buddies at Plurk are talking about a certain "stalker" that was viewing their Friendster and Multiply by the name of Pablo Banila. What I think is, this person is suffering from Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Some say he's a stalker, some say he's a hacker. What I say is he's a person who needs attention. Someone who was deprived from having a friend in his life. He was locked up on his room playing with himself and drooling over the pictures of Alodia. You shouldn't be afraid of this loser. Instead, understand him. You know, that poor guys who doesn't have any friends at all. Pablo wants your attention, can you give it to him?

Jennifer Hudson's family massacred

Jennifer Hudson, the star of Dreamgirls and American Idol, was in awe last Friday night as her mother and brother found dead at a South Side home in Chicago. Jennifer's nephew is still missing and police held custody a suspect that was linked to the deaths.

William Balfour was being questioned, but Julian King's whereabouts were not known, law enforcement sources told the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Balfour has not been charged.

Jennifer Hudson's personal publicist, Lisa Kasteler, confirmed the deaths.
"We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson," Kasteler said in a statement. "No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

The deaths appeared to be the result of domestic abuse, Bond said. The Cook County medical examiner's office said autopsies for Donerson and Jason Hudson were pending.
Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson said a family member entered the home around 3 p.m. Friday, found a woman shot on the living room floor and left to notify authorities. Responding officers found a man shot in the bedroom, Patterson said. There was no sign of forced entry.

Police tape blocked access to the large, white house, where a crowd gathered outside. Investigators with dogs and flashlights searched foliage surrounding a church that faces the home.

Authorities issued the Amber Alert for King and sought a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban. The child was the grandson of the female victim, officials said.
The alert said the child was possibly abducted and could be accompanied by Balfour, who was considered armed and dangerous and called a suspect in the double homicide investigation.

Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Balfour, 27, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle. Public records show one of Balfour's addresses as the home where Donerson and Jason Hudson were shot.
The alert said the boy could also be in a teal or green Chrysler Concorde with a temporary license plate, a left front headlight hanging out and scratches on the left side of the vehicle.

The tragedy comes as Hudson, who grew up in Chicago, continues to reach new heights in her career. Her song "Spotlight" is No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and her recently released, self-tiled debut album has been a top seller. She was featured in this year's blockbuster "Sex and the City" movie and is also starring in the hit film "The Secret Life of Bees."

She won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls." In an interview last year with Vogue, Hudson credited her mother with encouraging her to audition for "American Idol," which launched her career.
The singer, whose father died when she was a teenager, described herself as very close to her family. In a recent AP interview she said her family, which includes older siblings Julia and Jason, helped keep her grounded.

"My faith in God and my family, they're very realistic and very normal, they're not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that's just another place that's home," she said. "I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom I'm just Jennifer, (so she says), 'You get up and you take care of your own stuff.' And I love that; I don't like when people tell you everything you want to hear, I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean."

Hudson recently announced her engagement to David Otunga, best known for his stint on VH1's reality show "I Love New York."

Hudson's representatives would not disclose her whereabouts Friday. She had been scheduled to appear Monday in Los Angeles to collect an ensemble cast honor at the Hollywood Awards for "The Secret Life of Bees" with co-stars including Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning.

American jailed for being a lolicon

An American was jailed for possessing a shitload of lolicon (lolita complex) manga. Epic fail for this guy. Read on

An Iowa manga enthusiast has been charged with possession of obscene materials, based on the allegation that of his collection of over a thousand volumes, a handful depict underage participants; he faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years if convicted under the PROTECT Act.
A free speech legal defence fund, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, has leapt to his defence, claiming the law is a flagrant violation of the First Amendment rights Americans enjoy to free speech; the CBLDF is scathing:
“The government is prosecuting a private collector for the possession of art. In the past, CBLDF has had to defend the First Amendment rights of retailers and artists, but never before have we experienced the federal government attempting to strip a citizen of his freedom because he owned comic books.”
The CBLDF is most unhappy about the assault on freedom of expression, and is now also concerned that the move represents an unprecedented extension in scope of a law previously targeting chiefly dealers of pornography:
“In the lengthy time in which I have represented CBLDF and its clients, I have never encountered a situation where criminal prosecution was brought against a private consumer for possession of material for personal use in his own home.
This prosecution has profound implications in limiting the First Amendment for art and artists, and comics in particular that are on the cutting edge of creativity. It misunderstands the nature of avant-garde art in its historical perspective and is a perversion of anti-obscenity laws.”
The PROTECT Act being used as a basis for the charges has already taken a beating in courts, with portions being ruled unconstitutional, but sections still retain validity.
In particular, for a guilty verdict to be rendered the jury will have to decide that the material concerned is “obscene”, which involves applying the so-called Miller test to allow the material to be stripped of First Admendment protection:
• Whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest.
• Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions specifically defined by applicable state law.
• Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. (This is also known as the (S)LAPS test- [Serious] Literary, Artistic, Political, Scientific).
In the past, application of these criteria has proven complex and highly controversial, so it remains to be seen what kind of decision the manga in question will prompt.
The PROTECT Act, an act containing a diverse jumble of “child protection” measurres, itself has been the subject of much legal action, and it is still not clear to what extent it maintains the ability to target artistic or “virtual” maeterial depicting underage participants.
We do not hear how the unfortunate individual in question came to the attention of authorities.

My collection so far...

My action figure / statue collection so far

Greener pasture

Yesterday me and some thirty students went on an IT tour somewhere in Ortigas. No it's not some call center but an IT company who originally from Japan. We all attended an orientation about the company and what on Earth is their job. As the orientation went by, I saw something that originally found only in my go to Japan! This is it, this company is offering me all the things I dreamed of.

These were the things that really made me want to go to this company

1. Work is from 7:30AM - 4:30PM or 9:00AM - 6:00PM
2. There is no Saturday work.
3. You got to be trained in programming for FREE.
4. You got to learn Nihonggo for FREE.
5. You can go to Japan all expenses paid by the company.
6. Really really cute girl programmers (MOE~!)

The list goes on. As I talked with their HR manager, she told me that I can apply to their company anytime I want. She asked me if I had any experience in the industry, which by the way is zero, but she said it was okay. Then she told me, "You know, you are a teacher, and teaching is a noble profession."

Now I am in a dilemma, should I continue my teaching career or should I pursue the software engineering career?

Elmo Iive!

After the success of Tickle Me Elmo last year, Fisher Price launched a new Elmo for the whole family. This new breed of Elmo, Elmo Live!, hailed as the "most innovative and engaging Elmo toy ever," will officially hit store shelves today (October 14th) for $59.99, though we suspect the first batch will be snapped up in no time flat. Of course, those of you intent on retaining your sanity probably pre-ordered a few months back, but for everyone else, your battle to get one of this year's hottest holiday gifts starts in under 24 hours. For those wondering what's so special about this fellow, he supposedly tells jokes and makes movements that "give kids the feeling that Elmo is alive in their own homes."

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music..another killer

The trend of creating a smartphone is upon us. Thanks to Apple's iPhone, many company created their own cash cow that would make iPhone cry in envy. We all know that iPhone is all about hype and the emerging smartphones can prove to that. The Philippine community bought an iPhone becuase of the hype, they don't care if the interface is so-so. Anyway, on with the new Nokia 5800 Xpress Music.

This baby boast a 3.2" inch touchscreen and two cameras, a 3.2 snapper and a VGA front camera. The usual features like 3G,HSDPA and Wifi connectivity are present. It comes with a 8GB microSD straight from the box which really helps a lot. What concerns me is the S60 OS which is different from the usual Windows Mobile 6.1 of the other smartphones coming out of the market. Whether Nokia's faith on the Symbian OS be successful or not depends on the reaction of the users who will use it. All we can do is wait and see.

Intel Atom powered VB 6 programs

I was strolling along Trinoma before heading to a children's party when I found the booth of Intel. A booth that introduces their new Intel Atom processors. The Media Center is great but two of the booth's program really disturbed me.

The two programs in question are the cash register and the office timekeeping. The intrface was so-so and the concept was below avarage. Heck my students can make a better one! They used Microsoft Visual Basic 6 which is gaddam old already. They could have used VB 2005 or 2008 which is a lot better. What a waste of computer resources *sigh*

BTW, the price by visitng the booth is so lame. A keychain ~_~

Space elevator anyone?

A conference will be held in Japan regarding the construction of a "space elevator" that would transport humans and objects alike into orbit.

A conference discussing developments in space elevator concepts is being held in Japan in November, and hundreds of engineers and scientists from Asia, Europe and the Americas are working to design the only lift that will take you directly to the one hundred-thousandth floor.

A cable anchored to the Earth's surface, reaching tens of thousands of kilometers into space, balanced with a counterweight attached at the other end is the basic design for the elevator.
Don't Miss

* Training for space travel
* Astronaut teachers
* The Spirit Of

It is thought that inertia -- the physics theory stating that matter retains its velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force -- will cause the cable to stay stretched taut, allowing the elevator to sit in geostationary orbit.

The cable would extend into the sky, eventually reaching a satellite docking station orbiting in space.

Engineers hope the elevator will transport people and objects into space, and there have even been suggestions that it could be used to dispose of nuclear waste. Another proposed idea is to use the elevator to place solar panels in space to provide power for homes on Earth.

apanese scientists at the Japan Space Elevator Association are working seriously on the space-elevator project.

Association spokesman Akira Tsuchida said his organization was working with U.S.-based Spaceward Foundation and a European organization based in Luxembourg to develop an elevator design.

The Liftport Group in the U.S. is also working on developing a design, and in total it's believed that more than 300 scientists and engineers are engaged in such work around the globe.

NASA is holding a $4 million Space Elevator Challenge to encourage designs for a successful space elevator.

Tsuchida said the technology driving the race to build the first space elevator is the quickly developing material carbon nanotube. It is lightweight and has a tensile strength 180 times stronger than that of a steel cable. Currently, it is the only material with the potential to be strong enough to use to manufacture elevator cable, according to Tsuchida.

"At present we have a tether which is made of carbon nanotube, and has one-third or one-quarter of the strength required to make a space elevator. We expect that we will have strong enough cable in the 2020s or 2030s," Tsuchida said.

He said the most likely method of powering the elevator would be through the carbon nanotube cable.

So, what are the major logistical issues keeping the space elevator from being anything more than a dream at present?

Massachusetts Institute of Technology aeronautics and astronautics Professor Jeff Hoffman said that designing the carbon nanotube appeared to be the biggest obstacle.

"We are now on the verge of having material that has the strength to span the 30,000 km ... but we don't have the ability to make long cable out of the carbon nanotubes at the moment." he said. "Although I'm confident that within a reasonable amount of time we will be able to do this."

Tsuchida said that one of the biggest challenges will be acquiring funding to move the projects forward. At present, there is no financial backing for the space elevator project, and all of the Japanese group's 100-plus members maintain other jobs to earn a living.

"Because we don't have a material which has enough strength to construct space elevator yet, it is difficult to change people's mind so they believe that it can be real," he said.

Hoffman feels that international dialogue needs to be encouaraged on the issue. He said a number of legal considerations also would have to be taken into account.

"This is not something one nation or one company can do. There needs to be a worldwide approach," he said.

Other difficulties for space-elevator projects include how to build the base for the elevator, how to design it and where to set up the operation.

Tsuchida said some possible locations for an elevator include the South China Sea, western Australia and the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. He said all of those locations usually avoided typhoons, which could pose a threat to the safety of an elevator.

"As the base of space elevator will be located on geosynchronous orbit, [the] space elevator ground station should be located near the equator," he said.

Although the Japanese association has set a time frame of the 2030s to get a space elevator under construction -- and developments are moving quickly -- Hoffman acknowledges that it could be a little further away than that.

"I don't know if it's going to be in our lifetime or if it's 100 or 200 years away, but it's near enough that we can contemplate how it will work."

Building a space elevator is a matter of when, not if, said Hoffman, who believes that it will herald a major new period in human history.

"It will be revolutionary for human technology, and not just for space travel. That's why so many

Talk about elevator action hahaha.

Level-up being biased in The Philippine Blog Awards 2

Ok, As We all know Level-up Games! is now populated by a bunch of idiots who need iodized salt and is being commanded by corrupt GMs. But I can't believe they will go this far. Here's the story:

The 2008 Philippine Blog Awards had a gaming category wherein GameOPS was nominated. Level-up! was the one sponsoring this award and the rules were as follows

Sponsor Award: The Level Up! Gaming Blog Award

Here is another Sponsor Award for Level Up and its The Level Up! Gaming Blog Award.

The Level Up! Gaming Blog Award is open to:

1. A blog about gaming (console/handheld/online) in general or about Level Up!’s games only.
2. Philippine based Filipino Bloggers only

Mon Macutay
Marketing Manager, Level Up!

Carlo Ople
Marketing Manager, Level Up!

Kevin Codamon
Editor in Chief, Level Up!

take not the word OR

now, Level-up announced the finalists and boy oh boy it was hilarious!

Some of the finalists had only 3 posts. I believe these were one of the criteria

Content - 80%
The post itself and all its totality from the headline to the manner and style of writing is considered. Content and how the content was presented is critical. It is the total package, from the headline to the grammar and even to the effective use of images and sound, that is considered. Content for content sake is not enough it must be told in a manner that effectively conveys the idea and leaves an imprint in the readers’ mind.

Design and Usability - 20%
This refers to aesthetic and usability features of the blog. Not only should it look pretty but it should also be functional and stress free to navigate within. Is it pretty and user-friendly?

As you can clearly see. some of them haven't met the requirements

Compared to GameOPS

which I can recall is popular internationally

Was it because of our two negative posts regarding Level-up? Can't they accept constructive criticism?

You decide...

Siopao Day 2008

It was a very wonderful day! It started by a surprise text from someone important to me, which I thought that she didn't know it's my birthday. Then at work, my co-faculties thrown in some surprise celebration complete with a "siopao cake". Then a "secret admirer" gave me a box of siopaos. The celebration continued at my place with my friends and families and ended the celebration with a trip to Starbucks. The final hour of my birthday ended with a conversation with the person who started my day happy.

Movies to watch on 2009

2008 is not yet over but I'm dying to watch some movies that are due next year. Why can't I wait? Check this line-up and see for yourself:

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

This one's obvious. After removed from its original screening which is November 21, this latest sequel to the Harry Potter saga is planning a July 17 2009 worldwide premiere. I don't care about the agonizing delay, I just wanted to watch the second to the last installment of the Harry Potter saga.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Set 2 years after the first movie. Michael Bay and producer Steven Spielberg said in interviews that, if they ever made a sequel to "Transformers", they would make a big-screen adaptation of the Unicron Saga, since they feel it's the most logical plot for a sequel as it spans nearly every form of Transfomers media (the original series, the newer cartoon and the comic books). Scheduled for airing on June 26, 2009.

Dragon Ball

The anime all of our generation loved has a Hollywood adaptation. I know anime+Hollywood=suck but based on the pictures, it looks promising. I will watch this because I wanted to revisited some childhood memories watching this.

Resident Evil: Degeneration

Who would have thought that the now classic game Resident Evil 2 will finally have a sequel that is full CG? After years of finishing Resident Evil 2, I'd been longing for a sequel and long have I waited for this moment!

STI is proud of their 84% passing rate; Nothing much to be proud of

I was watching Rated K today and they featured STI College, an old nemesis of my Alma Mater AMA University. Old, because they were not much of a threat anymore. Anyway, they mentioned that the passing rate of their school in the recent Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (PNLE) held last June 2008 was 84%. It might say that it's not bad. but as I double-checked it on their website, it turns out that the 84% they were talking about was 55/66 of their examinees. Sheesh! 66 examinees?! Come on, they should be proud if it's 100%, but with 66 examinees, 84% is really low and they should be ashamed of it. No wonder they didn't mentioned the number of examinees on Rated K. My sister told me to let them be for it's their first time achieving that. Oh well, I'll let it pass for now.

What the hell did he just said?

Saksi, a news program of GMA 7 had a reporter who might be on drugs or something hehehe

Japan planning to have its first woman Prime Minister

Yuriko Koike emerged Wednesday as a possible contender to be Japan's first female prime minister, a former television anchorwoman who has been a defence minister and environment minister, She will contest a party vote on September 22 to replace outgoing Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. Reminds me of former president of the Republic of the Philippines Corazon Aquino, the first woman president, emerged after Ferdinand Marcos was exiled. Details after the jump.

Fukuda, who has faced months of low poll ratings, announced his resignation Monday, plunging Japan's long-dominant ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) into crisis mode.
General elections must be held by September 2009, but the government is in trouble against an emboldened opposition while the economy, the world's second biggest, is teetering on the verge of recession.
"I want to consider what we need in general, rather than my own individual situation," Koike told reporters when asked if she would seek the top job.
"I'm contacting various people since you can't play a baseball game all by yourself."
Hidenao Nakagawa, the former number two of the party and a backroom fixer, hinted at his support for Koike, calling for a leader who backs free-market reforms that have lost steam in the past two years.
"We have to pick a candidate among reformists," Nakagawa said after meeting with Koike.
Koike, an expert on the Middle East and fluent in both English and Arabic, is known for her close ties with reformist premier Junichiro Koizumi, who was popular during his 2001-2006 tenure.
She belongs to the LDP's largest faction. Its head, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura, voiced support for a competitive race.
The vote is for the LDP's president, who then becomes prime minister.
"All of us share the view that it's desirable for the LDP, which has been driven to the edge of a cliff in a sense, to hold an active, fair election to elect its president," said Machimura, the government number two.
But the Asahi Shimbun reported that 23 of the LDP's 47 prefectural chapters have already made up their minds to back Aso.
A Kyodo News poll also said Aso was the most popular choice with the public. More than 35 percent of voters named him as their favourite among 10 possibilities, with Koike receiving nine percent.
Aso, a former foreign minister, publicly backed Koizumi-era reforms but is seen as more supportive of government spending to boost the economy.
Aso has run unsuccessfully three times to be prime minister. The former Olympic marksman is known for his hawkish views, although he has softened his image in recent years by highlighting his love of comic books and pop culture.
Currently the LDP's secretary general, he is expected to formally announce his candidacy on Monday and make election pledges, including new stimulus measures to put the brakes on an economic slowdown.
"The front-runner is Aso. That's for sure. For the LDP, Koike is a gamble," said Hidekazu Kawai, honorary professor of politics at Gakushuin University in Tokyo.
He likened Koike to the failed US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, saying she would energise Japanese women voters.
"I think many people would support her if she keeps her spirits high," said Kuniko Inoguchi, the minister for gender equality issues under Koizumi.
The LDP election "isn't something just for men to hold and debate about," she said.
Japan has one of the developed world's lowest rates of female representation among politicians and corporate executives. Only 89, or 12 percent, of the 722 members of parliament are women.
The LDP has been in power for all but 10 months since it was created in 1955. But it lost control of one house last year to the opposition, which has tried to block the LDP agenda in hopes of winning the next elections.
"To break the current impasse, I wanted to refresh the system with new members. I want to show an LDP full of energy," Fukuda, widely criticised for his sudden resignation, told party members Tuesday.
Other potential candidates to succeed him include Nobuteru Ishihara, son of nationalist Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara.

Japanese Investigators mistaken sex doll as corpse

Police in Izu responded to a report of a possible corpse in the woods by dispatching an investigation team. Details after the jump

Fifteen officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a human form wrapped in plastic and tightly bound around the neck, midriff and ankles, with hair protruding from one end.

The body was left untouched and taken away for examination, and the crime scene duly secured by a police line.

Dozens of extra officers were dispatched to interview potential witnesses, while the evening edition of the local newspaper carried a report of the gruesome find, complete with a photograph of the crime scene.

By mid-afternoon, the body was in the hands of police pathologists. But when they sliced open the wrapping, they were confronted not by a decomposing corpse, but by a life-sized sex doll.

Google launches Chrome as their very own browser

Introducing the Google Chrome.

Google Chrome is a browser that uses a new JavaScript version 8 and CSS version 3 and most important of all, it's open source. Read more about it and where to download it after the jump.

quote from Google:

A fresh take on the browser

At Google, we spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And like all of you, in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends - all using a browser. People are spending an increasing amount of time online, and they're doing things never imagined when the web first appeared about 15 years ago.

Since we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if you started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.

So today we're releasing the beta version of a new open source browser: Google Chrome.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff - the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better . By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

This is just the beginning - Google Chrome is far from done. We've released this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and we'll continue to make it even faster and more robust.

We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others - and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

The web gets better with more options and innovation. Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the web even better.

Anino Pwned for Piracy

Anino Games was owned by the NBI lately due to issues regarding the use of pirated software. Anino Games was popularly known as the one who created the first all Filipino game entitled Anito which was developed on a gaming software named DarkBasic, which is the "older brother" of Blitz3D, the software I used to develop my thesis way back in college. Hmmm I wonder if their DarkBasic is licensed or pirated? *smirk*

Full story after the jump.

Filipino video game developer Anino Games Inc. is currently on hot water after the raid of the National Bureau of Investigation last August 22nd 2008. The raid was a result of the complaint filed by AutoDesk at the NBI's Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division.

NBI confiscated 36 computers installed with alleged illegal copies of AutoDesk applications which include 3D Studio Max 2008, 3D Studio Max 9, Maya 8.5, AutoCAD 2008, Maya 2008 and Combustion 4.

Anino Games President Niel Dagondon released the following statement to after the raid, "the company has always been willing to work with AutoDesk... "[A]ttacks such as these are damaging not just to Anino and its staff but to the entire Philippine creative and outsourcing industry in general. This has a negative effect not only on Anino's operations but to the reputation of Philippine offshore service providers as a whole composed of dollar-earning companies whose clients are mainly based abroad"
