The Duya - Prestoza Nuptials

Today was the wedding of by college best friend, best because we'd been a lot together and we trust each other in many ways. Anyway, today was her happiest day and I was there to witness their holy matrimony. It was also a happy night for me as I'm the lucky bastard who caught the wedding bridal garter. Pictures to follow, I haven't brought my camera lol. Here are the pics as promised

R.I.P. GeoCities

One of the most famous free web hosting during my college life, heck one of the pioneers is finally going to heaven. Geocities is being closed down by Yahoo! as Geocities' traffic has been falling over the past year.

GeoCities, one of the original web-hosting services acquired by Yahoo! in 1999 for $2.87 billion will no longer accept new members and Yahoo! is encouraging the existing users to upgrade to a paid hosting. Sigh, we had good times with Geocities as I remember our college group website. I also suggest this free web hosting to my students when I was teaching web development. Well, everything has an ending and Geocities is finally going to rest in peace.

4chan users hacked Time 100

The users of the online bulletin board 4chan, which LoLcats and some other internet memes spawn. allegedly hacked the results of the Time 100 where as you can see that moot is the number 1 on the ranking.

moot is 4chan's creator Christopher Poole and looks like most of his devotees are doing their best in placing him on the top spot. Not only that, they previously manipulated the remaining Top 20 spots by getting the first letter of each name which spelled “Marblecake, also the game.”

The results were hacked with an auto-voting program spread on 4chan. Currently moot still tops the ranking and no word from Time regarding the matter

Hotmail and Windows Messenger integrated..FINALLY

We all know that Yahoo! integrated their Yahoo! Messenger with their Yahoo! Mail so you can chat while checking your mail. Google also integrated their GTalk with their Gmail with matching pop-ups and alerts. Then the question is, what the hell took Microsoft so long to do this on their webmail service?

Customers in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and USA will see this feature for the first time today (as usual, rollout to different individuals is gradual, so if you don’t see it yet, please be patient). This feature rolled out to users in France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the UK last month. Not in your area yet? We will be rolling out web-based Messenger to more locations in the coming months.

Oracle to buy Sun Microsystems

Oracle Corporation is indeed buying Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion after I.B.M. failed on sealing the deal.

Oracle said the deal is valued at $5.6 billion excluding cash and debt. Oracle is calling Sun’s Java “the most important software” it has ever acquired. The deal, which is expected to close in the Summer and was unanimously approved by Sun’s board of directors, has massive implications for the future openness of Java and MySQL.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. April 20, 2009 Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) and Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun’s cash and debt.

“We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle’s earnings by at least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing. We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion to Oracle’s non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over $2 billion in the second year. This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share contribution in the first year than we had planned for the acquisitions of BEA, PeopleSoft and Siebel combined,” said Oracle President Safra Catz.

“The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission-critical computing systems,” said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. “Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system - applications to disk - where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”

There are substantial long-term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris. Java is one of the computer industry’s best-known brands and most widely deployed technologies, and it is the most important software Oracle has ever acquired. Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle’s fastest growing business, is built on top of Sun’s Java language and software. Oracle can now ensure continued innovation and investment in Java technology for the benefit of customers and the Java community.

The Sun Solaris operating system is the leading platform for the Oracle database, Oracle’s largest business, and has been for a long time. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris. Oracle is as committed as ever to Linux and other open platforms and will continue to support and enhance our strong industry partnerships.

“Oracle and Sun have been industry pioneers and close partners for more than 20 years,” said Sun Chairman Scott McNealy. “This combination is a natural evolution of our relationship and will be an industry-defining event.”

“This is a fantastic day for Sun’s customers, developers, partners and employees across the globe, joining forces with the global leader in enterprise software to drive innovation and value across every aspect of the technology marketplace,” said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun’s CEO, “From the Java platform touching nearly every business system on earth, powering billions of consumers on mobile handsets and consumer electronics, to the convergence of storage, networking and computing driven by the Solaris operating system and Sun’s SPARC and x64 systems. Together with Oracle, we’ll drive the innovation pipeline to create compelling value to our customer base and the marketplace.”

“Sun is a pioneer in enterprise computing, and this combination recognizes the innovation and customer success the company has achieved. Our largest customers have been asking us to step up to a broader role to reduce complexity, risk and cost by delivering a highly optimized stack based on standards,” said Oracle President Charles Phillips. “This transaction will preserve and enhance investments made by our customers, while we continue to work with our partners to provide customers with choice.”

The Board of Directors of Sun Microsystems has unanimously approved the transaction. It is anticipated to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The UP Cat Killer

Recently a plurk and twit circulated regarding a certain Joseph Carlo Candare who killed a helpless kitten without feeling any remorse. Animal lovers all over the country were enraged as this cat killer walks free among our society.

The deranged person posted this entry on his multiply

4th Epic Fail: An Accidental Crime. First day sa supercon. Lunch time came. On our way out of old NIP I saw the cat I almost killed last Tuesday. Now everyone knows I hate cats. It's an unexplainable feeling towards them. Like some internal hatred. Hindi ko talaga alam kung bakit pero anumang pagpipigil sa sarili ay hindi sapat upang mapangibabawan ang panggigil ko sa mga pusa. I pulled it on its tail and threw it. Then like some pro wrestler I jumped on it and my feet landed on it's torso. Slam! Felt good! But the cat didn't die, well not yet. It ran for it's life and just as I was about to catch up on it somebody yelled: "Pwede bang pabayaan mo yung pusa?!". It was instant and involuntary. I stopped on my tracks. Nobody ever stopped me when assaulting cats. Well I guess there's always a first time for everything. The cat got away. Or at least that's what i thought. So we went to lunch Mel, Jayson, Tracy and me. After lunch, balik na sa kung anumang naiwang gawain. Then Tracy and Mel told me " Hui Jc napatay mo yung pusa". Hours later, habang abala sa XRD, a guy came in. Tanong niya: "Sinong pumatay dun sa pusa?" Bang! Dat was me boi. Guilty as charged. I didn't see it die pero sabi ni Myles it coughed up blood or at least something like that daw. Didn't realize I gave it a fatal hit. This isn't the first time I've killed a cat but this time it's different. It didn't occur to me back then that the cat had a leash. So I think somebody owns it. Well it's very well loved in NIP from what I heard and I just ended it's life.

So there you go I'm sorry. And I wont be striking another one for maybe about a month. It feels good when your beating it(a cat) up but you suddenly feel something strange when it turns off permanently. That's how I feel right now. And maybe for the next days. Dang, am I a cat serial killer?

I don't know why this sadistic criminal can still eat and sleep as his soul is being tormented already in Hell. Here is an information about the killer:

Name: Joseph Carlo Candare
Nickname: JC
Age: 18
School: UP Diliman
Course: Applied Physics
Hometown: Butuan City

You can visit the bastards Friendster account and tell him how you feel.

May the ceiling cat rest the kitten's soul and deliver justice to this deranged individual

The Anti Hentai bill...sort of

The House of Representatives is ushering a bill that would ban child pornoraphy here in the Philippines but due to lack of research bans Hentai instead.

According to the HOR site:

Hentai, the Japanese pornographic cartoon that depicts children in explicit sexual activity, is considered child pornography material and one may be severely penalized by just mere possession of it.

The last time I checked hentai means pervert in Japanese.

If they want to stop child porn, they shouldn't ban hentai as a whole. If you plan on banning hentai, why not ban porn itself? No votes for you guys in 2010.

here is the link to the bill

I guess even politicians need iodized salt

Bluetooth 3.0 to use ad-hoc technology

Bluetooth 3.0 will be officially announced next April 21, 2009 and it will be the start of high speed short range data transfer. The new version will actually negotiate a quick ad-hoc WiFi connection. The idea is to leverage the speed of WiFi while keeping power usage low, and I'd say it's a pretty trick solution, since most Bluetooth-capable devices also have WiFi radios . Since the ad-hoc WiFi connection is managed over Bluetooth, no actual wireless network is necessary, and the switch will appear seamless to the user except for the sudden increase in data transfer speeds.

Spring 2009 Anime

After last season's fantastic anime, Japan is now airing their spring season lineup. Here are some animes you might want to watch:

Four girls, one school, same dream. no this is not a Lucky Star clone many have said on the interwebs. K-ON! is an anime of its own. If you love music and moe girls, this anime is for you!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

a sequel to the anime of 2003 that became a hit that we all know. The action and alchemy is still there, as well as the comedy moments and fighting scenes that made FMA popular. It is also being simultaneously aired on Animax so for those people who don't know what a torrent is can watch the show. Will the same formula work on this next installment? We'll soon find out

Tears to Tiara

I have watched this anime as the very first simulcast of Animax last Monday and I'm sure Animax didn't made the wrong choice on this one. Set on a fantasy atmosphere where an evil being is on the brink of revival. Sounds a cliche right? But if you watch the first episode, the artwork and the effects can compensate for the cliche. I'm backing-up Animax on this one.
So take a pledge and place this on your favorite social networking site.

“I’m watching Tears to Tiara and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood on Animax now”

Sengoku Basara

A Romance of the Three KIngdoms / Dynasty Warriors inspired anime that's full of martial arts and uber cool effects. Will this formula make this anime a hit or will it be a shame? So far the story is good and the characters are introduced one by one. Looking forward to the next episode.

Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~

A serious anime that is all about espionage and deceit. If those two genre are your favorite, this anime is for you. But if you're the childish and moe type, stay away from this anime for it's target is the mature audience.

Queen's Blade

The highly anticipated anime for us toy collectors. Queen's Blade is a graphic artwork that was circulating the interwebs for quite some time now. The anime is..uughh.. not for children as Oppais are displayed almost every part of the scene and the protagonist wet herself TWICE. Is this really aired on Japanese primetime?

Valkyria Chronicles

yet another anime on a medieval setting. This one is kinda light on the far and it seem to head on a romantic genre rather than an action genre. We'll just wait for further developments.

Pandora Hearts

A gothic-mystery-fantasy anime that looks promising to watch. It's not anything to write home about, but the writing and the pacing are competent enough to make you curious about what's around the corner.

Eden of the East

A romantic story of a boy who's memory is wiped out and a girl who is oh-so cute. The sorty is not yet progressing so there is still room for some surprises.

My Last Day as a Teacher

April 8, 2009 will always be remembered as the day Great Teacher Siopao gave up his powers as a teacher. My whole Informatics family gave me a heart warming farewell as I packed my things and leave the place I once called home. They say that the only way to know if you became a successful teacher or co-faculty is when you changed the lives of your students and colleagues in such a way that they will treat you with respect no matter what happens. My journey as a teacher finally ended and a new path looms before me. Will I be a successful programmer or teaching is the only job for me? Goodbye doesn't mean the end, it's just the beginning of a new page in my life.

This is Sir Siopao signing off...

I run linux on my netbook.
I think linux is perfect for netbooks.

I run Vista x64 (until 7 is stable and compatible enough for me) on my desktop.
I think Vista is perfect for high-end desktops.

My sister has a macbook running OSX.
I think OSX is perfect for my sister.
